2012 Annual Report

SUBMITTED BY PGMCINTOSH ON FRI, 11/05/2012 - 10:38

For the fourth consecutive year, we are delighted to report a significant increase in diabetes research activity in Scotland both in terms of number of studies and numbers of participants. After a very modest increase in numbers of academic studies in 2010, 2011 has seen a 28% increase in numbers of studies with many academic studies now being large collaborative efforts which are recruiting right across Scotland. Academic studies have seen an increase of 45% in patient recruitment again as they recruit across multiple sites and Health Boards. After a 38.6% increase in the number of commercial studies in 2010, 2011 has seen a smaller, but still significant, increase of 21% in the numbers of studies. A number of commercial studies have closed in the last year and many are still in the recruitment phase so numbers of patients recruited to these studies fell by 27.5% (there was a 33% increase in recruitment in commercial studies in 2010).

Annual Report 2011

The 2010 audit of diabetes research activity shows an annual increase for the third consecutive year in both numbers of studies and participants. The increase in numbers of commercial studies is particularly heartening as it is widely reported in the media that the pharmaceutical industry is leaving the UK to carry out its research abroad. Our data shows that this particular statistic is not true for diabetes research in Scotland. The small increase in funding of academic studies probably mirrors charity funding and is reflective of the economic recession.
Participant numbers continue to increase in total, again with a significant increase in the number taking part in commercial trials. This is certainly due to the National Diabetes Research Register and its ability to identify patients for studies with very tight eligibility criteria.

Annual Report 2009

The SDRN 2008 diabetes research studies portfolio shows a healthy increase in both total number of studies and total number of participants. We have met and exceeded our projected number of 20,000 participants in trials (representing nearly 10% of our patient population). Although diabetes research is still centred around the four major academic centres and their associated hospitals, there is an increase in activity in the smaller Boards upon which we hope to build.
