Portfolio Report 2008

The SDRN 2008 diabetes research studies portfolio shows a healthy increase in both total number of studies and total number of participants. We have met and exceeded our projected number of 20,000 participants in trials (representing nearly 10% of our patient population). Although diabetes research is still centred around the four major academic centres and their associated hospitals, there is an increase in activity in the smaller Boards upon which we hope to build.

JDRF Open Meeting in Edinburgh

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) Research Open Meetings are a fantastic way to keep up to date with the latest research developments and a great way to meet other families who are also affected by type 1 diabetes. The day itself will feature presentations from five of the UK’s top researchers on topics including the artificial pancreas, beta cells and islet transplantation. There will also be an inspirational talk from Douglas Cairns who conducted a round the world flight despite having type 1 diabetes.

New Training Officer

Alison Sudworth Starts work today as SDRN Training Officer. Alison is currently a Diabetes Specialist Research Nurse at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh but is being seconded to this SDRN role for 2 days a week for the next seven months. Alison will be available to conduct individualised on-site training and we hope to organise some more centralised training.
